The American Glazer family are long-term investors in Manchester United and have no plans to sell the English Premier League soccer club following flotation, Executive Vice Chairman Ed Woodward said on Tuesday.

United floated on the stock market in New York in August under a dual-share structure that left the Glazers firmly in control of the 19-times English champions. A vocal group of fans has critisied the Glazers, accusing them of loading the club with excess debt when they bought it for 790 million pounds ($1.27 billion) in a highly leveraged deal in 2005.

"It's a very popular business that people have interest in. The answer is (it's) not for sale," Woodward said, when asked about the future ownership of the club. "The opportunities that we see going forward and the excitement that they have in this is undiminished. I don't see them (the Glazers) selling completely for many, many years."

Woodward said the club now had gross debt of around 360 million pounds. It was comfortable with interest payments of around 31 million pounds this year on its own forecast for underlying earnings (EBITDA) of at least 107 million pounds. He said the club was not being outmuscled by rival European teams in the transfer market for top players.

"We can compete for whichever players we want to compete for," said Woodward.

United signed Dutch international striker Robin Van Persie from Arsenal this summer for an estimated 22 million pounds and are second in the 20-team Premier League.

The nine-foot statue was commissioned in November 2012 to mark 25 years at the club, when the North Stand was also renamed the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand.

Ex-players and the first-team squad were in attendance in honour of English football's most successful manager.

"It's fantastic, a really proud moment," said Ferguson.

The 70-year-old has been in charge of the Reds for 26 years, winning 27 major trophies including 12 Premier League titles and two Champions Leagues.

"Normally people die before they see their statue, so I'm out-living death," added Ferguson. "I've had an incredible journey at the club and I've had so many great players, some of whom are here today. They should build this statue for them all, because they've been absolutely marvellous. From 1986 right through to today, the players have given us enormous pleasure. Everyone has had a part to play, from the players to the coaching staff, medical staff and, of course, the fans."

Former United players Eric Cantona, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Edwin van der Sar, Peter Schmeichel, Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, and Gary and Phil Neville joined fans for the unveiling while David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo sent pre-recorded tributes.

United chief executive David Gill said: "People can talk about many things like the hairdryer and Fergie time, but the most important thing you have brought back to this club is respect."

Revealing why Lady Cathy was chosen to unveil the statue, Gill added: "She is Sir Alex's greatest supporter. And I think he's a bit scared of her."

Ferguson thanked his wife for her support throughout his career but joked: "Cathy has promised that every Saturday morning she's going to come down here and bow to the statue!"

In a pre-recorded message, former England captain Beckham said: "What an amazing day for you, your family and for the club.

"I just want to say thank you for everything you have done for me. My time at United was without doubt the highlight of my career and I cherish it."

Real Madrid forward Ronaldo added: "Well done boss, I think you deserve it 100%."

"Don't hold your breath waiting for Manchester United to jump through the transfer window when it opens next week," Ferguson wrote in the programme notes for Saturday's home league game with West Bromwich Albion.

"If you believed everything you read in the media, we would have the biggest squad in Europe, not to mention becoming bankrupt. It's been open season to link us with a stack of players, admittedly some very good ones, but it just isn't going to happen."

Ferguson brought in Dutch striker Robin van Persie, a player he is now comparing to United great Eric Cantona, and Japanese midfielder Shinji Kagawa in the last transfer window.

"You can never say never in football because you don't know who might become available but, speaking generally, I am not looking to do any serious transfer business in January," he added.

"I don't have to because I am more than satisfied with the players I have in my squad, a group as good as any I have had in my time at Old Trafford."

Desi consider ca suntem acoperiti pe stanga cu Young, Kagawa si Giggs (care atentie, e un super jucator si la varsta asta, nu cum zicea un amator de fotbal pe nume Adrian de aici, ca ar fi o fosila) eu as vrea ca mosul sa faca o surpriza si sa vina Bale.

England's most successful Manager will retire at the end of the season, Manchester United have announced today.

Sir Alex Ferguson was quoted:

The decision to retire is one that I have thought a great deal about and one that I have not taken lightly. It is the right time.

It was important to me to leave an organization in the strongest possible shape and I believe I have done so. The quality of this league winning squad, and the balance of ages within it, bodes well for continued success at the highest level whilst the structure of the youth set-up will ensure that the long-term future of the club remains a bright one.

Our training facilities are amongst the finest in global sport and our home Old Trafford is rightfully regarded as one of the leading venues in the world.

Going forward, I am delighted to take on the roles of both Director and Ambassador for the club. With these activities, along with my many other interests, I am looking forward to the future.

I must pay tribute to my family, their love and support has been essential. My wife Cathy has been the key figure throughout my career, providing a bedrock of both stability and encouragement. Words are not enough to express what this has meant to me.

As for my players and staff, past and present, I would like to thank them all for a staggering level of professional conduct and dedication that has helped to deliver so many memorable triumphs. Without their contribution the history of this great club would not be as rich.

PS: Primul lucru pe care l-am gandit dimineata cand am aflat: sa nu vina Jose sa ne disstruga jocul, sa mearga la Chelsea...

Acum fara sa fiu carcotas... nu mi se pare ca jocul practic de United e vreo capodopera fotbalistica... mi se pare chiar destul de banal si plictisitor mai ales in schimb e foarte eficient. Fapt ce a si contat in ultimii 3-4 ani la rezultate. Lipsa de spectacol dar eficienta maxima. Ceea ce e de apreciat poate...pana la urma in istorie raman rezultatele.

Deci nu cred ca ar avea ce strica Mourinho la joc.

Asta poate acum. Dar intre 1998-2000 echipa lui Ferguson facea spectacol peste tot si marca in medie 3-4 goluri pe meci....cred ca acea echipa cu maximul din 1999 e superioara celei din 2008 si e cea mai valoroasa echipa creata de Ferguson.

Am specificat ca a contat eficienta chiar daca a fost lipsa de spectacol in ultimii 3-4 ani. Nu in toata perioada lui Ferguson la United.

Mourinho nu e un antrenor defensiv, Vlad. Parca as vrea sa-l vad la United, desi e cam sigur ca David Moyes este inlocuitorul lui Ferguson.

Greu de crezut ca se va mai naste un antrenor care sa-l egaleze pe Ferguson. Mosul va ramane pe veci o legenda.
