Byrne - brace in both legs.
FENLON PLOTTING Steaua UPSET
Shelbourne manager Pat Fenlon is planning for more great European nights after steering his side past Glentoran at Tolka Park on Wednesday night.
The Eircom League champions' prize for their 4-1 victory to complete a 6-2 aggregate win is a Champions League second qualifying round clash with Steaua Bucharest next week.
The 1986 European champions from Romania will visit Dublin next Wednesday with the return in eastern Europe the following week.
Fenlon admitted last year's run past Reykjavik and Hajduk Split was still fresh in his mind and said: "I don't think they (Steaua) will make the mistake of underestimating us after last year when we played well twice against Split and deserved to go through.
"We are going out to watch Steaua tomorrow and we have a couple of videos on the way. We will plan our game-plan over the weekend."
Fenlon's men were always in command defending the 2-1 advantage they gained in the first leg in Belfast last week.
And despite the visitors' brave resistance the game turned in Shelbourne's favour when Glens' Paul Leeman was sent off for handball in the box just past the half-hour.
Jason Byrne scored from the resulting penalty to add to his first-leg brace and give his side a 2-1 advantage on the night.
Fenlon added: "It's very hard on them because it is a double advantage for us but we have had a few of those go against us so when they come to us you can't complain."
Byrne would go on to grab another double in a superior second-half performance in which the home side could have added more goals to their tally.
Glentoran boss Roy Coyle conceded: "You have to be honest and over two games they played well and probably deserved to go through.
"I don't know much about Steaua but Shelbourne did well in their last Champions League campaign. Confidence will be on a high and it will not be easy for Steaua to come here and get a result."
Coyle named an entirely new strike-force on the night in a bid to repair the first-leg damage but Shelbourne could have extended their lead when Byrne spooned a simple shot over the crossbar in the third minute.
The home side's deserved opener arrived in the 13th minute when captain Owen Heary met David Crawley's long free-kick in the box and headed past Elliott Morris to extend his side's aggregate lead.
But just when Shelbourne looked safe, the visitors hit back with a goal out of nothing in the 21st minute, recalled Michael Halliday squaring for Peter McCann to poke home in the box.
Glens were battling away well to the delight of their large travelling support before German referee Peter Sippel red-carded Leeman for illegally blocking Stuart Byrne's shot.
After Jason Byrne's spot-kick conversion Glentoran's chance had gone, and Shelbourne effectively booked their clash with Bucharest in the 58th minute when Byrne's strike-partner Glen Crowe struck a superb right-foot volley into the top corner of the net.
Byrne completed his and Shelbourne's tally in the 71st minute when Heary crossed from the right and the big striker headed home from the edge of the 12-yard box.
Fenlon hailed his strike partnership and added: "Some of the things that have been said about Jason and Glen have been nothing short of scandalous and I thought they were great again tonight.
"It was a harder game tonight than the first leg despite the score and we played some good football and created a lot of chances."
