Steaua si-a gasit antrenor: Protasov semnează miine

Oleg Protasov had worn a Dynamo Kiev #10 jersey for 3 years (1988-1990). He came to Kiev from Dnepr Dnepropetrovsk, where he became the second leading scorer in Europe in 1985 with 35 goals. Throughout his career in USSR, he scored 100 goals in USSR Championships, 70 in Dnepr and 30 in Dynamo Kiev. He was a part of USSR National team at two World Cups (1990 and 1986) and at European Championship Finals (1988).

In September 1990, Oleg received a seemingly lucrative contract with Olympiakos Athens (Greece), where he went to play with his former Dynamo Kiev and Dnepr teammate Gennadiy Litovchenko. There he was coached by a former Dynamo Kiev great Oleg Blokhin. Although Protasov never reached his potential playing in Athens, he still scored 12 goals a season on the average, but became enveloped in a protracted contract dispute with the management, that had tried to scheme him out of some of his earnings.

Oleg Protasov had been forced to leave Greece. In 1993-1995, he played in Japan in the Japanese proffessional soccer league, where he continued to score well. In 1998-1999, Oleg returns to Greece to coach the second division Veria FC. In 2003, he was chosen, in the midseason, to take over the Olympiakos Pireaus head coach position. He led Olympiakos to 2002/2003 Greek Championship.

Oleh Protasov in action for the Soviet Union in 1990 (©empics)

Olympiakos gold for Protasov

Friday, 30 May 2003

By Igor Linnyk

Ukrainian Oleh Protasov is celebrating his first ever title in charge of a professional football club after leading Olympiakos Piraeus FC to the Greek crown last weekend.

Record run

The 39-year-old former Soviet international took charge of the club in mid-season following the departure of Srecko Katanec and sparked jubilations in the Athenian suburb of Piraeus as a 5-1 win against Xanthi FC saw them edge local rivals Panathinaikos FC to win a record seventh successive title.

Remarkable achievement

It was a remarkable achievement for Protasov, who had been working for a scout at Olympiakos while running his own youth academy, Protasov Club, in Piraeus. He spoke to UEFA.com about his short but eventful time in charge of the club he once represented as a striker.

UEFA.com: You were the fourth coach of Olympiakos this season. Did you have any doubts about accepting the job?

Oleh Protasov: Not for a single second. This is a chance one gets once in a lifetime. Three years at the club as a player in the 1990s were also a great help. I knew what to do. I only needed 24 hours to get my thoughts together and work out a plan. First of all, I reverted to the old tactics the team was used to. Olympiakos played a flat back four for six years, before Katanec decided to switch to a sweeper system. The players were not comfortable with it. I switched to 4-4-2 and adopted a flexible system of training. The training was too hard and the players were clearly tired.

UEFA.com: You worked under top Ukrainian coaches like Valeriy Lobanovskiy and Oleh Blokhin. What did you learn from them?

Protasov: I was absorbing all the information I possibly could need. Three years ago, when I was in charge of [second division] Veria FC, I was saying 'I am not an established coach yet'. It is the same now. I don't think that even a title allows me to say I am an established coach. The experience I have is too shallow.

UEFA.com: You closed the gap on Panathinaikos and finally beat them 3-0 in the decisive league game. How satisfying was that?

Protasov: I must thank my players. All of them did their best and more - the match against Panathinaikos is the best example of teamwork. Before that game, our chairman had doubled the prize money for winning the title. Even without that news, the players were motivated in the best possible way. It was harder to get them going against weaker opposition.

UEFA.com: How did supporters react to you when you took charge at the club?

Protasov: It was OK, but of course I am more known here as a player. I am not yet regarded as a coach. Everyone here wants to see a famous coach in charge of Olympiakos. Plus, my way of behaving is not typical for Greece, where emotions run high.

UEFA.com: As well as working at the club, you have your own academy - Protasov Club. Do you have enough time to devote to that?

Protasov: Quality coaches are working with the kids, and I am helping them as often as I can. One hundred and fifty children aged six to 14 are playing in our academy, including my first son Nikita. The system still interests me a lot.

UEFA.com: Could you stay on as Olympiakos coach?

Protasov: It is too early to tell. Whether I stay on or not, or become an assistant - all of this depends on what the club has to offer.

Adi16.06.2005 11:21

Are totusi o carte de vizita.
